**L.C. Smith A-2 Grade Second Style Engraved 12 Gauge Shotgun Restored


12 Gauge. 30" barrel length. SN: 202217. 2.75" chamber length. Full Chokes. Blued finish with casehardened frame mounting walnut round knob semi pistol grip stock with splinter forend and fine bordered checkering to wrist and forend with Fleur de Lis embellishments. Double barrel side by side sidelock ejector shotgun featuring a matted concave barrel rib with front brass bead sight, and A-2 Grade engraving in the second style. Shotgun further features assisted opening. Maker mark L.C. SMITH engraved into each sideplate. Patent mark to watertables reads PAT'D JULY-13-86./OCT-5-86. Right barrel is struck MADE TO ORDER BY THE HUNTER ARMS CO. FULTON N.Y., while the left is marked SIR JOSEPH WHITWORTH FLUID COMPRESSED STEEL. Both barrels display deep TRADE MARK stamps forward of the flats. Handguard lug displays the correct A2 marking indicating the grade of the engraving. Interior face of the handguard is engraved with patent information reading EJECTOR/PAT'D/MAY-28-1901. The shotgun is richly engraved with A2 grade second pattern engraving combining both fine spiral scroll enclosing floral bouquets on the sideplates, and animal vignettes including pointers on the flanks of the forward frame, quail to the forward edge of the left sideplate, and woodcock to the right sideplate. Further engraved borders enclose the forend, muzzles, and the breeches. Triggerguard is gold inlaid with the name J. BARNETT. Serial numbers match on the trigger plate, watertables, forend, and barrel flats. Butt fitted with an aftermarket rubber recoil pad on a black spacer. 13.5" length of pull. 1.75" drop to comb. 2.5" drop to heel. 7.66 lbs.

Item comes with a letter from the L.C. Smith Collectors Association written by James Stubbendieck. It affirms that the shotgun was finished on May 27, 1907 and inspected by gunsmith William C. McKnight, who inspected most of the high-grade shotguns produced by L.C. Smith during his tenure. {C&R}

Condition
Very Good as Refinished. Bores are Very Bright with some dust at the muzzles. Metal refinish fading to gray on the flanks of the frame, sideplates, and lower frame. Strong case colors remain on the watertables. Barrel flats have been jeweled. Forend retains further case colors on the interior surfaces with a gray patina dominating and some brown spots to handling areas. Blued finish is strong with some brown flecking on the triggerguard, a nick to the left edge of the barrel rib, and multiple nicks to the edges of the triggerguard. Wood shows some scattered handling dents and mars with some skips to checkering. Chip to the wrist behind the tang has been touched up with resin fill. Tight wood to metal finish. Chip to the edge of the left wrist has been secured with resin. Barrels lock up with some left to right wiggle and the lever resting slightly right of center.
